Samantha weiss

Samantha Weiss is a nonprofit development professional with a unique background spanning scientific research, conservation, and philanthropy. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Animal Sciences from Purdue University before completing a Master of Science in Biology from Georgia Southern University. After spending nearly a decade researching marine life, with a focus on the conservation and physiology of great white sharks, Samantha developed a deeper understanding of the connection between scientific discovery, education, and the resources needed to protect and preserve our natural world. She transitioned into nonprofit development, where her career has focused on helping organizations build the partnerships and philanthropic support needed to bring people, purpose, and philanthropy together to create lasting impact.

Samantha's commitment to animal welfare was shaped in part by her experience during graduate school in Georgia, where she witnessed a severe companion-animal crisis and a lack of resources for animals and rescue organizations. Stray dogs were a frequent sight, and when she encountered one in need, she often took responsibility for providing food, housing, and veterinary care at her own expense. Those experiences shaped her belief that addressing the animal welfare crisis requires solutions at both ends: helping families afford veterinary care so pets can remain safely in their homes, while also supporting animals who do enter shelters and need a second chance.

That mission is personal for Samantha. Her own dog came to a shelter after his family could no longer afford the veterinary care he needed for luxating patellas. After adopting him, Samantha was able to provide the surgeries and care he needed. She joined BirchBark’s board because she believes the organization’s work can help prevent families from having to make the impossible choice that his family faced, while also strengthening the broader network of support for animals in need.

Beyond her professional work, Samantha is deeply engaged in strengthening the Monterey County community through nonprofit leadership and service. She serves as Co-Chair of the Development Committee for the Junior League of Monterey County and as a board member of the Monterey Bay Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and the Arthritis Research Coalition. She also volunteers as a foster mom with Peace of Mind Dog Rescue, providing temporary homes and care for animals in need.
